Do you have 30 minutes available every week to help local high school students improve their reading comprehension?? Charlotte High School recently received a "D" rating. A lot of this relates to reading and reading comprehension. Transient students (who bounce from school to school) or troubled students (who spend more time out of the classroom than in it) can be "developing readers" who need extra one on one time with a tutor or mentor. The school is reaching out to find volunteers who can donate half an hour (or more) to work with students to improve reading skills. I hope that everyone signs up to be a mentor to a high school student. The Young Professionals reaching out to the young people... it can't get better than that. Are you interested in helping teachers in the classrooms to teach reading skills? Did you know that one-to-one teaching is recognized as the most effective strategy for helping learners with reading challenges? As a tutor, your gift to the student is a literacy ticket which will help them become an active participant in the world.
